Seekers who wish to study and understand the scriptures meet once a week to study a chosen text independent of a teacher. Small portions of the text are read and discussed. Each Study Group member tries to explain how he or she has understood the topics. Discussion is open to all members. A group leader who has some experience of the study of the scriptures leads the discussion. Unresolved questions are listed and discussed periodically with Swamiji. This method of study compliments and enriches one's spiritual pursuits.
Seeker's most obvious obstacle in the spiritual path is one's own vasanas- inherent tendencies that burst forth from within. These tendencies drive one to think, feel and act according to the nature of vasanas. These impressions are the residue from our past actions. Vasanas create desires in the intellect. If left unchecked due to lack of discrimination, intellect passes them on to the mind where they produce agitation. Emotions and feelings become so strong that the body carries out the action to satisfy the desire.
There is no common method that is applicable to the whole of mankind to exhaust vasanas. However, it is clear that for permanent happiness, peace and bliss, one has to use one of three main equipments available to them; namely the Body (B), Mind (M), and Intellect (I). If BMI can be detached from the Objects (O), Emotions (E), and Thoughts (T) respectively, the Mind and Intellect are quietened considerably to reach a stage of contemplativeness. The divinity in oneself then becomes self-evident.
Our ancient scriptures are perfect "guide books" or manuals for a person to tune up his/her mind and intellect. Scientific and consistent study of these scriptures is spiritual education. Vedanta, the art of self-integration and science of personality rehabilitation cannot be handed across the table or assimilated in a few days. It not only brings intellectual knowledge but also provides the possibility of becoming more dynamic and efficient in the worldly transaction and be peaceful and happy within. It has become imperative that one has to study and understand the message of Vedanta and practice what has been understood - with faith, persistence and devotion.
